Stepping Out in Faith: Trusting God for the Unknown

Have you ever felt God calling you to step into something new, but fear and uncertainty held you back? Maybe the task felt too big, too hard, or too unknown. I’ve been there. When I first stepped off the plane in Mozambique on December 15, 2000, I thought I was committing to one year. What I didn’t know was that I had just said yes to a journey of 24 years and counting—a journey full of challenges, growth, and evidence of God’s faithfulness.

This story isn’t about me. It’s about how God shows up when we trust Him with our “yes.” Whether you’re called to a new ministry, starting a business, loving your neighbors better, or saying yes to a dream God placed in your heart, this is for you. God’s plans are bigger than ours, and He equips us every step of the way.

The Power of Saying Yes

When I arrived in Mozambique for what I thought would be a short season, everything was overwhelming. I didn’t feel ready, but I quickly learned an important truth: God doesn’t call the equipped; He equips those who say yes.

From learning to navigate African roads to leading a ministry, I was stretched far beyond my comfort zone. And that’s exactly where God wanted me. He stretched me because He knew what I needed to grow. Whether it’s learning a new skill, stepping into leadership, or simply showing up every day, God provides the tools and strength you need—just when you need them.

What about you? What’s holding you back from saying yes to God’s call? You don’t have to see the whole path; you just have to take the next step.

Faithfulness Beyond the Present

One of the hardest parts of ministry is not always seeing the fruit of your labor. But God reminds us that our work isn’t in vain. 1 Corinthians 3:6 says, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.” Sometimes we plant, sometimes we water, and sometimes—when the time is right—we get to see the harvest.

Not long ago, God gave me a glimpse of the impact of my ministry while I was working. I saw a picture in my mind of one of the teenage boys at Beacon of Hope Africa as a grandfather, teaching his grandchildren about the lessons he learned here. That vision was a reminder that our yes today can impact generations. Your obedience matters. Your faithfulness has eternal significance.

How to Step Into Your Calling

If you feel God leading you to step out in faith, here are three practical steps to start:

  1. Pray and Listen: Spend time seeking God’s direction. He often speaks through His Word, trusted mentors, or the opportunities He places in front of you.

  2. Take Small Steps: You don’t have to see the whole picture. Focus on the next step, trusting that God will guide the rest.

  3. Equip Yourself: Use the resources available to you. Whether it’s learning a new skill, joining a training program, or connecting with a mentor or missionary coach, God equips those He calls.

Your yes matters! God will equip you as you go. Trust Him, take the step, and watch how He works through you.
